Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on European Union leaders for an additional $79 billion in funding to support Ukraine’s war effort. The request was made during a speech at an EU summit in Brussels. Zelenskyy stated that the war will cost 155 billion euros next year and that Ukraine needs at least 70 billion euros more from the EU for defense, weapons, and national resilience.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the requested amount is realistic and urged the EU to provide the support. The funding would help Ukraine maintain its military operations and protect its population from Russian attacks. The EU has already provided significant financial aid to Ukraine, but Zelenskyy argued that more is needed to ensure the country’s security.
The request comes as tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to rise. Russia has launched attacks on nine regions of Ukraine, causing power outages and damaging homes. At least 15 people have been injured in the strikes. Meanwhile, Russia has seized assets from European companies that support Ukraine, including French, German, Swedish, and Belgian firms.
The situation has also affected energy markets. In the UK, the energy regulator Ofgem is considering measures to stabilize energy prices, which have fluctuated due to the war. The conflict has had a lasting impact on global energy supplies and economic stability.
The war in Ukraine has become a central issue in international relations. As the conflict continues, the demand for financial and military support from the EU remains high. Zelenskyy’s call for additional funding reflects the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
