Former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for multiple sex offenses against two girls between 1985 and 2008. The sentencing took place at Newry Crown Court. Donaldson, 63, showed no remorse during the proceedings.
The court heard that Donaldson was convicted of rape and sexual assault against one girl, and indecent assault against another. The judge noted that Donaldson had expressed no regret, apology, or shame for his actions. The sentence includes 11 years for rape against one victim and four years for offenses against the second, to be served consecutively. Donaldson will also be registered as a sex offender indefinitely.
Donaldson was a prominent political figure in Northern Ireland, leading the Democratic Unionist Party. His conviction marks a significant legal outcome for a former leader of the largest unionist party. The victims, who were minors at the time of the abuse, have spoken publicly about the impact of the crimes. The case has drawn attention to historical sexual offenses and the long-term consequences for victims.
