Former swimming coach George Gibney has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing four girls and attempting to rape one of them. The 78-year-old was found guilty of indecent assault on four girls and attempted rape on one girl between 1971 and 1981. The court heard that Gibney’s actions were described as predatory in nature.
Gibney, a former Olympic swim coach, was convicted of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape. The case came to light through journalism that initially exposed his actions. His lawyers later used the same journalism as part of their defense during the trial.
The victim, who was 12 years old at the time of the alleged rape, described feeling isolated and believed she was the only one affected. She now urges others to seek help. The sentencing took place in a courtroom where the defendant was removed from the room in a wheelchair after the verdict was delivered.
Gibney’s case highlights the long-term impact of sexual abuse and the role of media in bringing such cases to light. The court emphasized the predatory nature of his behavior, underscoring the severity of the offenses. The conviction marks the culmination of a long legal process that began with public exposure and led to a significant prison sentence.
