A former Irish coach has been sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison for sexually abusing children in the 1970s and 1980s. George Gibney was convicted of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape after a trial earlier this year. Judge Micheál O’Higgins described the abuse as systematic and predatory, emphasizing how Gibney abused his role as a coach. Joe Molloy attended the sentencing, later joined by Chalkie White, a former Irish national swimmer.

The court heard that Gibney’s actions were part of a pattern of abuse that targeted young athletes under his care. The prosecution argued that his position of trust allowed him to exploit his victims over a long period. The sentencing followed a trial that highlighted the lasting impact of the abuse on survivors.

This case has reignited discussions about historical abuse in sports and the challenges of bringing perpetrators to justice decades after the crimes. Many survivors have spoken out in recent years, pushing for greater accountability and support. The conviction marks a significant step in addressing past wrongs, though the emotional and legal journey for victims remains complex.
