Irish and European authorities are collaborating to investigate a series of cyberattacks targeting supermarket chains. The Garda National Cyber Security Centre is examining whether the attacks were a test for future ransom demands or if they were orchestrated by a hostile state.
The attacks, which disrupted operations at several major supermarket brands, were first reported in late September. Initial assessments suggest the breaches may have been designed to test the security infrastructure of these businesses. Officials are currently analyzing the scope of the incidents and the potential motives behind them.
This is not the first time cybersecurity threats have targeted retail sectors in Europe. In 2022, similar attacks led to temporary store closures and significant financial losses. The current investigation aims to determine if the attacks were part of a broader campaign or isolated incidents. The involvement of both national and European agencies highlights the growing concern over cross-border cyber threats.
