Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly has warned of a surge in drug-related intimidation cases, with families facing severe threats including rape and violence over debts. The warnings come amid ongoing investigations into recent family deaths in Waterford, where two individuals have been charged.
The Garda chief described the situation as “unfathomable,” emphasizing the gravity of attacks on innocent households. These threats, often linked to drug debts, have escalated in recent months, with some cases involving arson and physical harm. The Gardaí are still examining “other avenues” in the Waterford case, despite the charges against two suspects.
This follows broader concerns about the safety of communities, particularly in areas with high drug activity. The Garda work-to-rule action, directed for major EU Presidency events, has also drawn attention. Commissioner Kelly noted that only a minority of Gardaí support the strike, highlighting ongoing tensions within the force.
The Waterford case has raised questions about the effectiveness of current measures against organized crime and drug-related violence. With families increasingly targeted, authorities are under pressure to address the growing threat. The Gardaí continue to investigate, but the situation remains unresolved.
