A major study by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has revealed that over a quarter of online gamblers in Ireland are losing ‘a lot of money’. The research, commissioned for the Irish betting watchdog, highlights concerning patterns in gambling behaviours.

The report found that roughly one in five gamblers received daily notifications from gambling operators, indicating frequent engagement with betting platforms. These notifications, often linked to promotional offers or game updates, may contribute to increased spending. The study also noted that a significant portion of participants reported losing substantial amounts of money, raising concerns about the financial impact on individuals.

This research follows growing public and governmental interest in regulating online gambling in Ireland. Previous reports have highlighted the risks associated with problem gambling, particularly among younger demographics. The ESRI findings add to the body of evidence supporting calls for stricter oversight and consumer protection measures. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions to address the financial and psychological effects of excessive gambling.
