The Irish government has announced an additional €1 million in budget support for inter-county players, increasing the total funding for the scheme to €8.2 million. The announcement was made by the Gaelic Players Association (GPA), which welcomed the financial injection as a significant step toward sustaining elite sports in the country.
The new funding will be allocated to support players competing in inter-county competitions, covering expenses such as training, travel, and equipment. The GPA had previously secured €7.2 million in funding, and this latest contribution brings the total to €8.2 million. The association emphasized that the support is crucial for maintaining the competitiveness of Irish sports at the national level.
This funding comes as part of a broader government strategy to enhance sports infrastructure and athlete welfare. In recent years, there have been calls for increased investment in Gaelic games, with concerns raised about the financial sustainability of the sport. The additional support is expected to help retain talent and improve performance in key sports such as football and hurling. The government has also expressed its commitment to long-term investment in sports development, recognizing the cultural and economic value of these activities.
