Clare County Council has announced it will begin construction of a flood relief scheme in early 2028. The €8.5 million project is designed to protect 134 properties in Kilkee from flooding. The scheme is part of a broader effort to address recurring flood risks in the area.
The project will involve the installation of flood barriers and drainage improvements. Local officials say the work will be carried out in stages to minimize disruption to residents. A spokesperson for the council stated the project is a priority due to the increasing frequency of severe weather events.
The flood relief initiative follows several years of heavy rainfall and storm surges that have caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure in Kilkee. Previous efforts to mitigate flood risks have been limited, prompting the council to seek long-term solutions. The new scheme is expected to be completed by late 2029.
