RTÉ’s director general, Kevin Bakhurst, has expressed concern over a €20m funding reduction announced by the government, which he says will impact the broadcaster’s five-year strategy. The cut, which brings RTÉ’s budget down to €240m from the originally planned €260m, was revealed during Budget 2027 discussions. Bakhurst stated the decision was unexpected and could affect the organization’s ability to meet its strategic goals.
The government, led by Media Minister Patrick O’Donovan, has reportedly questioned the pace of reforms at RTÉ. O’Donovan has called for a written agreement between the broadcaster and the ministry, citing dissatisfaction with the progress made so far. This has led to a meeting between Bakhurst and O’Donovan, where the minister demanded to see formal documentation of RTÉ’s reforms.
RTÉ had been operating under a multi-annual agreement that included specific commitments. Bakhurst warned that the funding cut would make it difficult to fulfill these obligations. The broadcaster had planned its budget around the €260m figure, and the reduction now forces difficult choices.
The dispute highlights growing tensions between RTÉ and the government over financial planning and strategic implementation. With the €20m cut confirmed, the broadcaster faces the challenge of adjusting its operations without compromising its core functions. The situation remains unresolved, with both sides seeking clarity and agreement on the future of public broadcasting in Ireland.
