A gardaí have initiated a new investigation into the death of Yves Sakila, a Congolese national who died following an incident outside a Dublin department store in May. The man, 33, was found unconscious on the ground after an altercation with a security guard. Emergency services were called and he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The incident occurred on May 12, 2024, near the Grafton Street area of Dublin. According to initial reports, Sakila was involved in a dispute with a store security officer. Witnesses stated that the guard approached Sakila and attempted to detain him, leading to a physical confrontation. Sakila fell to the ground and was not revived despite medical intervention.
This is the second time gardaí have reopened the case. The first investigation concluded that the death was not a result of criminal activity. However, new evidence has prompted a fresh review. The Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police service, has not yet released details of the new findings.
The case has raised questions about the use of force by security personnel in public spaces. It also highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of foreign nationals in Ireland. The Gardaí have not confirmed whether any charges will be brought in connection with the incident.
